The road to medical marijuana in Mississippi has been a long one. However, as of 2023, there are now dozens of dispensaries in Mississippi open and ready to serve patients with a Mississippi medical marijuana card. If you believe you have a medical condition that qualifies you to be a cardholder in The Magnolia State, you may have a few questions about how to get started. Here is a look at how to get your Mississippi medical marijuana card and rack down the best dispensaries.

How to Get Your Mississippi Medical Marijuana Card

To obtain your Mississippi medical marijuana card, there are a few steps you have to take to gain approval. To qualify for the Mississippi Medical Cannabis Program (MMCP), you must have a qualifying medical condition, as well as a certification stating you would benefit from medical marijuana. Here’s a look at the general steps you will need to take to qualify for the MMCP as a patient.

1. Make sure you have a qualifying medical condition

MS has quite an extensive list of qualifying conditions, but you do have to be officially diagnosed with at least one condition to qualify as a patient. Some conditions that are approved include:

  • Cancer
  • Autism
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Glaucoma
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Hepatitis
  • Diabetic or peripheral neuropathy
  • Severe spinal cord disease or injury
  • Ulcerative colitis

You may also qualify for the MMCP if you have a debilitating condition that causes certain side effects with treatment. For example, you may qualify if you experience severe nausea, seizures, or chronic pain related to the treatment of a chronic illness or condition.

2. Visit a medical professional for medical marijuana certification

In order to show you are qualified to take part in the MMCP, you will need to schedule a visit with a medical professional that participates in the state’s medical cannabis program. In MS, a qualified medical professional may be a doctor, nurse practitioner, or even an optometrist if you have glaucoma.

You will undergo an evaluation by the medical professional to make sure you have a qualifying condition. If you do, the provider will issue a certification for medical cannabis that can be used to register for your Mississippi medical marijuana card.

3. Register with the Mississippi Medical Cannabis Program

Once you have been certified to use medical cannabis by a professional, you have 60 days to submit your application to the state to become a participant in the MMCP. Before you start the application process, you will be asked to set up a username and password through the Mississippi State Department of Health‘s online portal.

During the application process, you will be asked to supply a list of personal information and information about your qualifying condition. To finish the application, you will supply:

  • A digital photo of yourself
  • Proof that you are a resident of MS
  • Government-issued photo ID

If you are registering as a caregiver for someone else, you will also have to upload items like a caregiver authorization form or proof of legal guardianship of the individual that needs medical marijuana.

Where to Find Dispensaries in Mississippi

If you have obtained your card and need a dispensary Mississippi does have quite a few locations to visit. The Mississippi Medical Cannabis Program offers a comprehensive list of dispensaries on its website.

Currently, the state has 157 licensed dispensaries registered that are positioned in 32 counties across the state. As the program is just getting started, there will likely be many more dispensaries opened in the near future as licenses are approved. However, as of early 2023, most dispensaries could be found in Lee, Harrison, and Hinds County.
